TINARIWEN / THE HOGGAR TOUR

Doors: 19:00

Main Hall

Tinariwen returns to Akvárium Klub – The pioneers of desert blues back in Budapest on April 26, 2026
With their flowing desert robes and signature Tuareg turbans, the shesh, Tinariwen embody the very soul of the Sahara. The Grammy Award–winning band are the originators of the so-called desert blues – a hypnotic fusion of blues, rock, and traditional Tuareg rhythms. In their own Tamasheq language, they call it assuf – a word that means longing or homesickness.

Formed in 1979 in Algeria by young Tuareg musicians exiled from Mali, Tinariwen began by performing at weddings and local celebrations. In the early 1980s, during military training in Libya, they met other Tuareg artists and formed a loose musical collective whose mission was to express, through song, the struggles and hopes of their people. Their lyrics – rooted in themes of exile, resistance, and identity – soon became anthems of the Tuareg cause.

After the Tuareg uprising of the 1990s, Tinariwen’s members swapped their guns for guitars, transforming their experiences of war into music that pulses with both rebellion and yearning. Their raspy vocals, hypnotic guitars, and rhythmic handclaps invite listeners into a soundscape that is raw, transcendent, and utterly evocative of the desert’s spirit.
Over the past four decades, this rock’n’roll band of rebels has played more than 1,100 concerts worldwide, becoming ambassadors of Tuareg culture and earning international acclaim. Their 2012 album Tassili won the Grammy Award for Best World Music Album, with two other records also receiving nominations.

Tinariwen’s concerts are a mesmerizing spectacle: the musicians appear in traditional Tuareg attire that conceals much of their faces, adding to the mystery as their guitars and harmonies flow in a trance-like rhythm.

Following their highly acclaimed 2024 performance, Tinariwen return to Budapest on April 26, 2026, to bring their timeless desert blues and the eternal spirit of rebellion back to the stage of Akvárium Klub.
