Jamie Woon returns to Akvárium Klub after 10 years.
Jamie Woon emerged in the early 2010s as one of the decade’s most exciting new artists, before disappearing from the spotlight to question everything around him. Last year, however, he finally broke his silence with his new album 3,10, Why, When, and now he returns to his Hungarian fans on September 13 at Akvárium Klub.
A cult artist and one of the pioneers of London soul, Jamie Woon has earned praise from artists such as Erykah Badu and Pharrell. He has collaborated with Burial and Disclosure, written and produced for Elmiene, and built a devoted fanbase with songs like Night Air, Sharpness, and Lady Luck — the latter accompanied by a music video filmed in Budapest. Now, he is back.
One of the most distinctive voices in British music, Jamie Woon masterfully blends electronic textures with sensual soul music. His songs are now bolder and more self-assured than ever, backed by a band that performs with absolute confidence and precision. Released in October, 3,10, Why, When is Jamie’s third album – one that, by all accounts, was never supposed to happen. After the critically acclaimed Mirrorwriting (2011) and the Mercury Prize-nominated Making Time (2015), Jamie Woon simply disappeared.
“I was haunted by the question: is there anything worth saying?” he recalls. The answer eventually came through working with Swedish producer Martin Terefe at Eastcote Studios. “He basically tricked me into making an album,” Jamie says. “We made one song, then another, and by the time we had ten, we just said: this is an album.”
Strange, sharp percussion gradually gives way to lush strings. Thoughts born at 3am meet deep currents of love and belonging. Singing about torment becomes the cure for that very torment. “I don’t really know how to explain this music. It’s extraordinary to me that it exists at all.”
Alongside songwriting, Jamie Woon has also returned to live performance. As part of this new chapter – and 10 years after his last Budapest concert-— he will bring his unique songs back to the stage of Akvárium Klub on September 13.
Tickets go on sale on May 15 at 10am via www.livenation.hu and www.funcode.hu.
